Hyundai Breaks Record: 11 Lakh Sunroof Cars Sold in India in Just 5 Years!

Hyundai Sells Over 1.1 Million Sunroof-Equipped Cars in Just Five Years

Hyundai Motor India Ltd. (HMIL) has announced a major sales achievement in the Indian automotive market. As of June 2025, the company has crossed the sale of 1.1 million cars equipped with sunroofs, a milestone that reflects the growing popularity of premium features among mainstream car buyers across the country.

This achievement comes just five years after Hyundai first started widening the availability of sunroof-equipped variants in its domestic lineup. What once was considered a high-end luxury feature is now a common choice among Indian families, thanks in part to Hyundai’s aggressive product strategy.

More Buyers Choosing Sunroofs Than Ever Before

In the calendar year 2024, models equipped with sunroofs accounted for approximately 52% of Hyundai’s overall passenger vehicle sales in India. In just the first half of 2025 (January–June), that number increased further to 54%, indicating a noticeable shift in consumer preferences toward more aspirational, comfort-enhancing features.

At present, 12 out of Hyundai’s 14 models in India come with a sunroof option — ranging from budget-friendly hatchbacks all the way to premium SUVs and crossovers. This wide coverage has played a major role in meeting the evolving expectations of Indian car buyers.

Sunroofs Have Become a Key Attraction for Families

Interestingly, HMIL revealed that in the last financial year, every second car it sold came with a sunroof — a trend that suggests how strongly the feature resonates with family-oriented customers. Features like voice-controlled panoramic sunroofs and single-pane options have become deciding factors, especially among urban car buyers.

Keeping up with buyer demand, Hyundai began localising the production of sunroof modules — a move that has helped the brand lower production costs and extend the feature into more affordable trims.

Creta, Exter, and Venue Drive Sunroof Sales Momentum

Among popular models, the Hyundai Creta has led the pack in delivering strong numbers for the company’s sunroof-equipped cars. In fact, in June 2025, the Creta not only topped Hyundai’s sales chart but also emerged as the highest-selling passenger vehicle in the Indian market.

Hyundai’s Strategy: Bringing Global Features to Mainstream Buyers

Sharing his insights on the company’s latest milestone, Tarun Garg, COO and Whole-Time Director at Hyundai Motor India Ltd., stated:

“This milestone reflects the aspirations of modern Indian customers, who seek premium experiences even in everyday commuting. Our effort has always been to democratize global technologies and offer high-value features to a wider audience.”

Hyundai has been proactive in responding to market trends, largely by incorporating global features like connected car technology, ADAS, and sunroofs across price segments.

What Next? A Bigger, More Advanced Creta Hybrid Incoming

Meanwhile, the ever-popular Creta is expected to receive a next-generation upgrade in the coming years, possibly featuring a new hybrid powertrain and significantly updated design inside and out. This signals Hyundai’s commitment to not just offering cosmetic updates but future-ready cars with tech that Indian buyers are fast embracing.

Conclusion:
The sunroof, previously a niche and premium feature, has become a mainstream must-have in Indian cars — and Hyundai has clearly been a front-runner in this transformation. With over 1.1 million sunroof-equipped vehicles sold in just five years, Hyundai’s pulse on consumer preference continues to set it apart in the Indian auto industry.
